Listening

The dude put a gaggle of Beatles albums on Babeez last night, and I have been listening to them all morning.

"While my guitar gently weeps" comes on and without hesitation I start singing:

There's never been a nigga this good for this long
This hood
Or this pop is hot
Or this strong

Thanks a lot Danger Mouse.....

Dead to Death aka Parenting

Sometimes the tasks involved in being a parent aren't that apparent at all.....and recently there have been several occasions in which the boy has asked questions that make me clutch my chest and then fall over DEAD.TO.DEATH.

The other night while he was in the tub he yells, "Mom, what is playing doctor?"

Cut to me springing from the sofa, clutching my chest and hyperventalating, but muttering in the calmest voice I can muster, "Doctor?".......

Boy: Yeah, all the kids in my class have played it, but I don't know what it is...
Me: It's a game? Doctor? Have you seen this doctor game?
Boy: No, but you like take things out of the game....
ME: OPERATION!? OPERATION! Are you talking about Operation?
Boy: Oh Yeah! Operation.
Me: You've played operation. You had Shrek Operation.
Boy: I would like to play operation again.
Me: Yes! Yes, we will play it sometime soon. Operation!

And then I died. Eyes wide as saucers and overjoyed at the fact that I didn't have to explain "Doctor" to my eight year old son, I flopped back on the sofa over joyed at the bullet that I had just dodged. Ahhhhh. Score one for the parents!

This morning while getting ready for school he asks, "Mom, what is a rapier?" Ha! I have read enough Tolkien in my days to know the answer to this one....nice try kid. Instead of giving him the answer I told him to go get his Dictionary.....

He got to the "R's" and made his way closer to rapier, and LUCKY ME! what comes right before rapier? Rape. He sounds it out..Ra-eh-p. Then "Mom, what is rape?" Rather than have him read the definition, I snatch the dictionary and tell him "To rape is to take something without asking....but in a major way. Oh! Here is rapier! It is a small narrow, double edged sword. Tah Dah! Rapier! Now go brush your teeth."

I stood quietly in his room for a minute after he left and allowed myself the realization that this.....these questions....are only the very tip of the iceberg and that if I didn't ready myself, my head may very well explode by the time he is 10.

Someone needs to write an "Adolescence for Dummies" book.

Who will play Jerry?

The producers of Little Miss Sunshine are making a Jerry Garcia biopic based on "Dark Star" by Robert Greenfield. The movie is said to focus on Garcia's early music career, pre-Grateful Dead (my favorite years!!). The big question lies in who will play him?

I hope that they choose wisely, or they are going to have a lot of pissed off "Jerry's Kids".

The day after.....

I actually went into the boy's room late last night and woke him up to tell him that Obama won, "We did it! He won! Obama won! Now go back to sleep...".

Then "the dude" and I sat on the sofa for hours, amazed as the electoral votes kept pouring in. Ohio, Nevada! Nevada? Florida, and so on.

I thought that McCain gave a gracious speech, and that his booing supporters were assholes.

Obama's speech was spot on, and several times had me in goosebumps. It made me feel patriotic for the first time in my life. I know that this man is no savior, and that he faces challenges that are not going to be pretty. I know that this man is going to piss many people off before he gets the job done. I know that his term(s)in office are not going to be a vacation for our country. But I believe that he has the power to rally people, and to make us all want to work together for a change. I'm ready to give him a chance.

I am furious in regard to California's Prop 8 banning same-sex marriage. I am furious at the 562 Utah residents that donated money to help make Prop 8 happen.

But, Proposition 8 only won by less than 10%. I am holding out faith that someday soon we will outnumber the conservative douchbags and people can love and marry whomever they want. I would love for my son to be able to tell his children stories about..."When I was little, two men or two women couldn't marry each other! Isn't that crazy?!" just like I tell him now, "Less than 100 years ago, women couldn't vote. And 50 years ago African American people couldn't sit with white people at a restaurant or on a bus! Isn't that crazy!?". Now look at us. There is still hope.

Change is coming.

November 4, 2008

Friends, Readers, Internet Stalkers (you know who you are),

Today we have a chance to make history.

Today we have a chance to grant civil liberties to those that deserve them.

Today we have a chance to make change.

Four years ago I bundled myself and my 4 year old son up and we walked to the polls to vote. We talked on the way about the importance of voting and how if we want to see change in the world, we have to make it happen. It was a glorious thing, my son and I tromping through the leaves with our "I Voted" stickers on, full of hope and excitement as we walked home feeling we had done something important. When we woke the next morning and I told him that George Bush had won again, I felt like I had lied to him. I told him that we could make a difference, and we hadn't. Nevertheless, I have continued to take him to the polls with me when voting on local issues and keep up the notion that we can help make change happen.

When it came time to vote for the Democratic Presidential Candidate the now 8 year old boy knew who he wanted to be the next president, and it happened that I agreed with him. We got to the polls to vote and a poll worker said, "Now, he is not allowed to influence your vote in any way...." I looked at her and said, "This is his future too, you are wrong." We voted, collected another sticker and left feeling that once again, we had done something important......only to be let down again the next morning. The boy's reaction to the news was simple, he said "Well, I really wanted to see the first woman President, but the first African American President will be ok too." Kids...

The Democratic nominee's for President and Vice President were not my first choice, (frankly I would have liked to have seen a Clinton/Obama ticket)but in politics it always seems you are forced to choose the lesser of two evils, and to me Obama/Biden makes a hell of a lot more sense than "Old for da Earth Cotton Hill & Alaska Hockey Mom Barbie".

Tonight we will make that trek to the polls again and we will vote and we will be unafraid and full of hope.

Again.

Please remember to vote.

PHYSICAL THEORIES AS WOMEN
BY SIMON DEDEO

0. Newtonian gravity is your high-school girlfriend. As your first encounter with physics, she's amazing. You will never forget Newtonian gravity, even if you're not in touch very much anymore.

1. Electrodynamics is your college girlfriend. Pretty complex, you probably won't date long enough to really understand her.

2. Special relativity is the girl you meet at the dorm party while you're dating electrodynamics. You make out. It's not really cheating because it's not like you call her back. But you have a sneaking suspicion she knows electrodynamics and told her everything.

3. Quantum mechanics is the girl you meet at the poetry reading. Everyone thinks she's really interesting and people you don't know are obsessed about her. You go out. It turns out that she's pretty complicated and has some issues. Later, after you've broken up, you wonder if her aura of mystery is actually just confusion.

4. General relativity is your high-school girlfriend all grown up. Man, she is amazing. You sort of regret not keeping in touch. She hates quantum mechanics for obscure reasons.

5. Quantum field theory is from overseas, but she doesn't really have an accent. You fall deeply in love, but she treats you horribly. You are pretty sure she's fooling around with half of your friends, but you don't care. You know it will end badly.

6. Cosmology is the girl that doesn't really date, but has lots of hot friends. Some people date cosmology just to hang out with her friends.

7. Analytical classical mechanics is a bit older, and knows stuff you don't.

8. String theory is off in her own little world. She is either profound or insane. If you start dating, you never see your friends anymore. It's just string theory, 24/7.
