Skin

As a person with skin issues, I am loving this.

Please meet artist Ariana Page Russell.

"My skin is very sensitive and I blush easily. I have dermatographia, a condition in which one’s immune system exhibits hypersensitivity, via skin, that releases excessive amounts of histamine, causing capillaries to dilate and welts to appear (lasting about thirty minutes) when the skin’s surface is lightly scratched. This allows me to painlessly draw patterns and words on my skin, which I then photograph. Even though I can direct this ephemeral response by drawing on it, the reaction is involuntary, much like the uncontrollable nature of a blush."

New York is cold, but I like where I'm living

I love Leonard Cohen. There was a great interview with him on NPR this afternoon. You can hear it at:

Molly Manners

A person whom I can't stand posts something that says "So and so is sick of dealing with dumb people!!" Is there a rule in etiquette that says I shouldn't comment back to her and say, "Maybe you should go kill yourself then."?

St. Patrick Comes Out of the Closet

When the boy asked why I wasn't excited about St. Patrick's Day, I said, "Because it is a dark horrible day and I will tell you the truth about it tonight if you want to know." So right before bed he said, "Hey, you were going to tell me the truth about St. Patrick's Day...". And so I did. I went into a long diatribe about Christians verses Pagans in 400 AD. And on and on and on.

He listened to me patiently then looked me in the eye and said, "Are you trying to tell me that there are no such thing as Leprechauns?" to which I answered, "Absolutely not, I have just never seen one......"

If you want to get technical...

Telling the boy about me being up at 4:00am with sinus problems...

So I wake up at 4:00am and I can't breathe and my throat is killing me because I have been breathing through my mouth for god only knows how long. I get up, try to blow my nose...and NOTHING. I do everything I can do without taking medicine that could potentially keep me awake. Nothing works. I end up taking the medicine, 30 minutes later it is working and I finally fall back asleep.

Well, technically....you take in more oxygen when you breathe through your mouth. It is good for you. You should have just gone with that.

And surprisingly, I didn't strangle him. Why didn't I strangle him? Because revenge is sweet, and now I wait patiently for him to get congested so that I can use his words against him. Paybacks are a bitch son, and that bitch is your mama.

My Son, the Catholic...

This morning, 6:40 am:

Happy Fat Wednesday Mom.

Uh...today is Ash Wednesday. Yesterday was "Fat Tuesday"...so, happy Ash Wednesday.

Man, 40 days is a long time, huh? Like longer than a month...

Yes, it is longer than a month.

Are there going to be any Friday the 13th's in the next 40 days?

I have no idea.

Were there any Friday the 13th's when Jesus was in the desert for 40 days?

I have no idea.

Is grape soda really soda, or is it juice?

Soda.

This is going to be really hard!

Yesterday when I picked the boy up from school they were making Mardi Gras masks and bead necklaces. I asked the kids, "Are you guys making this for Fat Tuesday?" They all gave me blank stares. I said, "Mardi Gras?" and the boy says, "What is Mardi Gras?" I told him we would read about it when we got home. So while the boy and the dude were working on homework, I looked up Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, and Ash Wednesday and reported my findings back to the boy.

"So, Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, and Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Lent is when you give up something important to you for 40 days representing the 40 days that Jesus supposedly went into the desert, fasted, prayed and came out and started preaching to people."

This is when the boy decided that he would give up soda for 40 days.

My need to keep my son informed on the world around him has led to him now participating in Catholic ritual. I will not discourage it, as there are far worse things than not drinking soda for 40 days... I will however try to keep information to an absolute boring minimum if anything ever comes up about Cults, or Virgin Sacrifices.

Hours of hilarious fun....

for your cat!!

The last thing I need is one of my neurotic cats thinking they can fly a plane, drive a tank or commandeer a fire truck... The visual though, is highly entertaining.
